Laykin, G.W., Cpl., 1944
At Geel War Cemetery, Antwerpen, Belgium, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 4388784 Corporal George William Laykin serving with the 6th Battalion Green Howards (Yorkshire Regiment) who died 07/09/1944.

George William Laykin, the son of George William and Catherine Jane, nee Brighton, was born in 1914 at Lanchester. He had a number of siblings: Catherine 1912, Jonathan 1916, Margaret 1923 and Henry 1927. George's mother Catherine died in 1927. His father, George William married Olive A. Charlton, in 1932, at Sunderland.

In September 1939, George, Olive, daughter Catherine and son Jonathan were living at 3, Ford Street, Lanchester. George, born 1888, was a Deputy Overman and Manager Colliery (Heavy Worker) and Jonathan was a Colliery Joiner and Creosote Plant worker.

George William died at Antwerp Canal in 1944. His family added the inscription "Peace Perfect Peace" to his headstone.

George William Senior died 1942 and Olive died in 1995.

George William Laykin is remembered at Lanchester on L62.01 and L62.06
