Finch, J.M., Sgt., 1945
In Fayid War Cemetery, Egypt, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1593106 Sergeant (Wireless Operator/Air Gunner) John Martin Finch serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 09/02/1945.

Dorothy Hall has submitted the following:-

John Martin Finch, the son of John Joseph and Gertrude, nee Hannan, was born 2nd January 1925 in the Lanchester District. Gertrude died in 1927.

In September 1939, the family were living at 2, Council Bungalows, Kitswell Road, Lanchester. John, born 1884, was a Durham County Council Roadman. His daughter, Frances Lilian, born 1914, was at home and son, John Martin was still at school. John Senior later joined the ARP for Decontamination Duty.

John died 9th February 1945 at Shandur in Egypt. His father added "Sacred Heart Of Jesus, Grant Him Eternal Rest R.I.P." to his headstone.

John's father, John Joseph, died 1962 and was buried in Lanchester Kitswell Road Cemetery.

John Martin Finch is remembered at Lanchester on L62.01 L62.06 and L62.07
