Blackett, W., Tpr., 1944
On Bayeux Memorial, Calvados, France, is the name of 7926765 Trooper William Blackett serving with the Royal Armoured Corps attached H.Q. Squadron, 29th Armoured Brigade, who died 26/06/1944.

Dorothy Hall has submitted the following:-

William Blackett, the son of John and Isabella, nee Hopper, was born 18th January 1909 at Burn Hall, Durham. John, in 1911, was gamekeeper for Mr. Salvin of Burn Hall, one-mile south of Durham. There were a number of siblings: John 1900, Margaret Ann 1902, Florence 1912, Richard 1914 and Harry 1916.

Father John possibly died in the Lanchester District 1925.

William married Mary R. Eccles, (born 3rd December 1912), at Lanchester, Spring 1938.

In September 1939, William and Mary Blackett were living at 2, Garson Cottage, Guildford, Surrey. William was a Gardener. Living with them was his brother, Richard Blackett, who was also a Gardener.

There were possibly two children from the marriage: Kathleen born 1941 at Durham and William D. born 1943 at Surrey.

In September 1939, Isabella Blackett, born 1872, a housewife, was living at 6, West View, Lanchester. With her was John a Gardener in Private Service and Margaret Ann, also a housewife.

William was posted missing June 26th 1944 at Caen, Normandy. When he died, aged 36, Mary was living at Peaslake, Surrey.

Isabella Blackett died 1959.

William Blackett is remembered in Lanchester on L62.01 and L62.06
