Dorothy Hall has submitted the following:-
James Hodgson was born in Tantobie in March 1888.
James enlisted at Lanchester 19th December 1915 and went into the reserves. At this time, he was living at 9, Victoria Terrace, the home of his aunt. James was a Pit Head labourer and was five feet four inches tall. His next of kin was his brother Joseph of 21, Chapel Street, Tantobie.
James joined the Durham Light Infantry and after training went to France in September 1917. In July 1918 he was taken prisoner. He died of dysentery in the Reserve Hospital at Marishilf, November 11th 1918. However, it was not until March 1919 that this information was sent to Mrs Isabella Miller of 2 Victoria Terrace, Lanchester. Various letters were exchanged and it would seem that James had been brought up by Mrs Miller's mother and she could not complete the relatives' information form. His medals were sent to his brother Joseph at Tantobie.
