In Acton Cemetery, Middlesex, is the Commonwealth War Grave of T4/275679 Driver Frederick Hattams serving with the Army Service Corps who died 27/12/1916.

Pauline Priano has submitted the following:-

Frederick was born at Leadgate, one of 12 children of whom only 5 survived. He was the only son of Edward Hattams born 1852 at Truro, Cornwall and Frances Jackson of Kelloe, where she was baptised December 17th 1854. Edward and his four siblings left Blight’s Row, Redruth Town, Cornwall, and were brought to the north east by their widowed father Thomas. In 1871 they were living at East Castle Cottages, the male members of the family were all employed as miners. Edward and Francis were married in the district of Lanchester, May 25th 1872 and by 1881 were living at 48, Plantation Street, Leadgate, with their 4 daughters; Thomasina born 1873, Mary 1875 who died aged 12 years in 1888, Ellen 1877 and Jane Ann 1880. By 1896 they had had a further 3 children including Frederick in 1886, Frances 1893 and Georgina 1896. They had moved to 81, Front Street, Leadgate, in 1911, Edward Hattams was still working as a miner, Frederick (23) as a grocer’s traveller and Georgina (15) as an assistant draper, Frances (18) helped her mother to run the household.

Frederick married at Lanchester Wesleyan Chapel 26th July 1915, Dora Jackson, of Front Street Lanchester. When he enlisted at Stanley Dora was pregnant with their first child. Assigned as Driver T4/275679 Army Service Corps to the Horse Transport section, the largest section of the ASC. he was part of the 663rd ASC Company formed April 1916, based at the Reserve Depot, Park Royal, London. Driver Hattams died at Park Royal Camp Hospital, December 27th 1916 and was interred at Acton Cemetery, Middlesex. He was 30 years of age. His headstone bears an additional inscription which reads, “Dearly Beloved Husband of Dora Hattams.”

His widow Dora had given birth to their son Frederick George Hattams, September 23rd 1916. She received all monies due to him from the Army and would have been entitled to a pension for herself and Frederick Jnr had his death been attributed to his military service. No medals are listed as he never entered a theatre of war. Dora of 12, Smailes Street, Stanley, was granted probate in the sum of 159 pounds 15 shillings and 2 pence, July 25th 1917. She later lived at Norwood House, Lanchester.

Dora Hattams nee Jackson never remarried and died aged 71 years in 1962 registered in the district of Durham Central. Frederick George Hattams married Elizabeth Naylor in the district of Durham in 1940, he died aged 87 years in 2004, registered in Somerset.

Frederick’s father Edward Hattams died in the district of Lanchester in 1923 aged 71 years, details of Frances Hattams nee Johnson unknown.

On some records the name is Hattam.
