Joseph Norman Scott

Joseph Norman was born in 1896 to parents Thomas and Ellen Scott. He was baptised at Lanchester Parish church 6th September 1896. In 1901 the family lived in Station Road, Lanchester and Thomas was a coal miner.
By 1911, Joseph was 14 and already employed as a coal miner driver. At this time, Joseph was the eldest of six children, two other children having already died.
Joseph enlisted in Consett in November 1914. He was posted in August 1915 and died of his wounds on 5th September 1916 aged 20, probably at No. 21 Casualty Clearing Station at La Neuville, given that he is buried in La Neuville British Cemetery, Corbie. His family chose the following inscription for his headstone "Loved In Life Remembered In Death."
By 1919, the Scott family were living at 5 Ford Street, Lanchester and had three more children, including a son named Joseph Norman born in 1918.
