Bateman, J.R., Pte., 1916
On the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France, is the name of 27292 Private John Robert Bateman serving with the 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment who died 17/08/1916.

Ian Murray has submitted the following:-

John Robert was born in 1897 in Ulshaw in the Leyburn District of North Yorkshire; one of twelve children born to Matthew and Margaret Bateman, who themselves were born in Leyburn and Leeming (respectively).

In the 1901 census the family were living at Burnigill Bank, (on Croxdale - Meadowfield road) near Durham, where Matthew was a farm servant – hind.

By 1911 they were at Langley, Lanchester, which is a farm on the road from Lanchester to Durham and John, aged 13, was still at school.

John served in the 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment and died on the 17th August 1916. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Loos Memorial.

Awards: British War Medal; Victory Medal.
