Tyne Cot Memorial
Tyne Cot Memorial: Pauline Priano
Ian Murray has submitted the following:-
James Herbert Swain was born in 1897 in Greencroft where his father (also called James Herbert and born in Ferrybridge, Yorkshire) was a gardener at Greencroft Park. His mother, Isabella Sarah was born at Park Farm, Alnwick.
James served with the 9th Battalion of the Royal Scots and died on 20th September 1917 aged 20. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Given the date and place of his memorial it is likely that he was involved in the Third battle of Ypres otherwise known as the Battle of Passchendaele.
The Stanley News 22/11/1917 reports:-
Mr and Mrs J.H. Swain, Greencroft have received information that their son Pte., J.H. Swain, Royal Scots, is missing. When last seen he was helping a wounded officer out of a shell hole.
After the war his parents moved to Kitswell Road, Lanchester.
Awards: British War Medal; Victory Medal.
James Herbert Swain is remembered at Lanchester on L62.01 L62.02 and L62.04
