Newton and Thomas (Tom) Storey were two of eight children born to Noble and Hannah Storey. Noble, an agricultural labourer, was born at Hedley on the Hill, Hannah at Leadgate, a village nearby, while Newton and Tom were both born at Broad Oak which was a farm near Ebchester. Newton was born in 1891 and Tom was born in 1896.

In 1901 the family lived at Eddis Bridge, a farm near Derwent Reservoir and in 1911 they were living at Burnhopeside Hall Farm near Lanchester. Newton was a grocer’s assistant and Tom was an assistant with cattle.

Newton enlisted in Durham on 11th October 1915 while his brother, Tom, enlisted in Consett just nineteen days later on 30th October. Newton served at Wensley, Barnard Castle and Aldershot before embarking at Southampton on 4th May 1916 and disembarking at Le Havre the following day. He was promoted to Corporal on 14th May and further promoted to Serjeant on 6th July 1916. Newton was reported missing on 27th July 1916 and this was later assumed to be his date of death.
