On Runnymede Memorial, Surrey, is the name of 1124718 Sergeant James Stratton Wardle serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 08/07/1942.

James Stratton Wardle, known as Stratton, born 7th March 1912 was the son of Robert, born 1882, and Mary Elizabeth, nee Howcroft, born 1887. He had two brothers: John 1920 and Robert 1924.

In September 1939, Stratton's parents were living at Vindomora Road, Ebchester with his two brothers.

Stratton, a Rating Officer with Lanchester Rural District Council, was living at 33, The Briary, Shotley Bridge, with his wife Mary Ann, nee Armstrong, whom he had married in 1937. Their son Brian had been born in 1938.

Mary Ann Armstrong was the half sister of Thomas Armstrong

The photograph shows Stratton and Mary setting off on their honeymoon.
