In Klein-Vierstraat British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 28337 Lance Corporal Joshua Bartle Gailes, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 03/04/1917.

The Blaydon Courier 03/04/1920 carries the following:

"In ever loving memory of Lance-Corporal Joshua B. Gailes, 20th D.L.I., beloved son of Joshua and Lila Gailes, 'Bird Inn', Ewehurst Head, Dipton, who was killed in action on 3rd April 1917 aged 22 years. Deeply mourned by his loving father, mother, brothers, sister, and all who knew him".

He is remembered at Dipton on D46.02
