Sgt. McGoldrick was killed when Handley Page Halifax II DT554 GV-P of 1652 Heavy Conversion Unit was lost on a training flight. The Halifax took off from Marston Moor airfield for a fighter affiliation exercise, but crashed some 5 miles west of Ripon. Of the seven crew, four were injured, and Sgt. McGoldrick succumbed to his injuries at York Military Hospital at 19.20 hours.
