BURNOPFIELD

Trewick, J.E., F/Sgt., 1944
In Bari War Cemetery, Italy, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1561353 Flight Sergeant John Edward Trewick, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 12/11/1944.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

F/Sgt Trewick was killed when Vickers Wellington X LP603 ‘R’ was lost returning from a mission to Sarajevo to bomb marshalling yards. The Wellington successfully completed its mission, but blew up on landing back at base at Tortorella. It is thought one of the bomb load had ‘hung up’ and failed to be released over the target, and the jolt of landing set it off. The pilot escaped injury, but the rest of the crew were injured - F/Sgt Trewick and one other member of the crew succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

John Edward Trewick is remembered in Burnopfield on B155.01 and in Rowlands Gill R46.07
