F/Sgt. Liddle was killed when Martin Marauder I FK112 ‘L’ of 14 Squadron was lost on a shipping reconnaissance mission off Sardinia. The aircraft signalled that it had sighted a convoy of one merchant vessel escorted by two destroyers and three single-engined fighters, but nothing further was heard, and the Marauder was lost with all six crew members.
