Accommodation of Horses: Harperley Farm
An unidentified newspaper article reads:
"This station in the middle of nowhere explains the Harperley Prisoner of War camp. In the First World War, 100 prisoners were carried out on the trains to work in the Weardale farms. They lived firstly under canvas at Low Harperley and then in huts at Shipley Moss, on the other side of the river.
Midway through the Second World War, the railway brought more prisoners to Harperley Station. These Italians and Germans were accommodated in huts at Low Harperley which still stand. . .Harperley Station closed in 1955."
