Chadwick, E.J., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 4639 Private Edward James Chadwick, serving with the 1/5th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, who died 17/09/1916.

His great-nephew, Michael Cook, states:

Listed as killed in action aged 20 years on 17th September 1916 at the battle of Flers - Courcelette whilst involved in attack to take the Starfish and Prue trenches to the east of Martinpuich.

His body was never found so his name is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 14A & 15C.

He does not have the 1914-15 Star so it seems he may not have seen action until 1916 although I do have his 1914-18 War Medal and Victory Medal along with the round "Death Plaque" as well as an original photo of him in uniform and also a photo of his name on the Thiepval memorial.

He was the youngest, ( I think), of three brothers coming from the small village of Wetley Rocks around six miles outside of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire. Ernest and Thomas survived the war, Thomas being my Grandfather on my Mother's side.

I hope this information is of some use and my research will go on for more although details on a Private is hard to get hold of even if it exists."
Michael Cook, Knutsford, Cheshire

This is included here because although Pte. Chadwick was not from this region, he served with the Durham Light Infantry.

He is remembered in the Durham Light Infantry Book of Remembrance page 251
