The Journal 18/08/2000 tells Norman Cowan's story. He served with the Northumberland Hussars. He was taken prisoner after being wounded at the Battle of Cambrai in 1918 and wasn't released until after the war. He returned to his parents' home in Low Fell, where his mother had assumed he was dead.

Morpeth Herald 10/12/1998 tells the story of receiving his Legion d'Honneur at the age of 100. The award had been made to only 25 surviving British veterans of the Great War.
