MORPETH

Tank presented to town
“The tank presented by the War Office to Morpeth, in recognition of the collection in the borough of £188,000 by the War Savings Committee towards the cost of the war was formally transferred to the Mayor (Mr. Charles Grey) on behalf of the town, by Lord Joicey yesterday.
The ceremony took place in the Market Square and was attended by a large gathering of townspeople.
The permanent base of the tank will be in the garden opposite the Courthouse, at the entrance to the park presented to the borough by Lady Carlisle.
The tank was accepted on behalf of the town by the Mayor, who remarked that had it come to the town a day or two sooner, another savings campaign would be been inaugurated, and he did not doubt the results would have been equally satisfactory as the three weeks’ campaign which realised the £188,000” Illustrated Chronicle 27/09/1919.

Other trophies were rejected. The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 13/02/1919 reports:
"The Town Clerk read a letter received from the War Trophies Committee stating that they had decided, on the recommendation of the Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland, to offer the Corporation one German machine gun (damaged), one ammunition box, and one ammunition belt. The letter added that the cost of carriage must be borner by the consignee.
Mr. R.N. Swinney moved that they be not accepted. Mr. I. Armstrong, in seconding, said that the stores were not worth paying carriage on, and the motion was carried."
