W.V.S. Roll of Honour 1939-45
The W.V.S. Roll of Honour for 1939-45 names the following two women:

Mary Parmley, a Helper at the Central Station Canteen and a Knitter.
Gertrude Walker, also a Helper at the Central Station Canteen.

On 1st May 1942 they were walking home together to Benton during an air raid, at a distance of about three miles from the Canteen. They took refuge in an Anderson shelter which received a direct hit. Both were killed but their husbands, who were on duty, were unhurt.

Acknowledgments: Mr. Matthew McMurray, BA (Hons), MA, W.R.V.S. Archivist.
