Death of Mr. J. Eyre Macklin, 1920
"Garibaldian Veteran's Death

Mr. J. Eyre Macklin, who has died in Belfast at the age of 83, was well known in Newcastle, of which he was a native and from whence, at the age of 28, he joined the British Legion to fight with Garibaldi for the freedom of Italy. He had been a non-commissioned officer in the 10th Brigade Royal Artillery, and rose to be lieutenant with the Garibaldian forces. After his return to Newcastle he was associated with newspaper work on the defunct "Examiner". His son, Mr. T. Eyre Macklin, designed the war memorial at Barras Bridge."
