South Benwell Institute and Club welcome home

Newcastle Daily Chronicle 10/06/1919

Newcastle Daily Chronicle 10/06/1919 reports:

South Benwell Institute and Club
Welcome Home to Soldier and Sailor Members. A welcome home was given to the soldier and sailor members of the South Benwell Institute and Club at the Club last night. Mr. Edward Luke, jun. presided, and Mr. Robert Walker was in the vice-chair.

Mr. Luke said there were 72 members on the Honours Roll, and of that number 56 were present with them that night, and sat down to supper. Of the 72 who had seen service, five had made the supreme sacrifice, and most of the men had been wounded. The members of the club who were not able to actively serve the country in the field had not forgotten their brother members at the front. Each soldier and sailor’s wife had been given each Christmas 10s, and each child received 1s, entailing a cost to the club of over £100. The club had also arranged a concert at the Adelaide Picture Hall, Benwell, on behalf of the disabled soldiers and sailors of the district. This had realised £30, and the whole of the expenses were borne by members of the club.

An enjoyable smoking concert followed the supper.
