Wallsend Slipway presentation to local heroes, 1919
The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 05/05/1919 reports:

“Presentation to local heroes.

Patriotism rewarded at Wallsend.

At the works of the Wallsend Slipway and Engineering Company, yesterday, presentations were made to
Pte. M. McManus, M.M. 7th East Yorks;
Sergt. J. Hulme, M.S.M., 19th N.F.
Engineroom Artificer R. Tytler, R.N.R., three employees of the firm”.

Pte. McManus received a gold watch, treasury notes for £25 from the foremen and workmen;
Pte. McManus received war savings certificates to the value of £25.
Sergt. J. Hulme received a gold pendant and £25, plus war savings certificates to the value of £25. He also received a gold watch from the local distinguished order fund, and he will receive a gold albert from another source.

The report continues:

Seven employees have earned distinctions in the war, and the foremen and workmen have subscribed £195. 15s 1d towards the recognition fun; and the firm have also presented each of the heroes with war saving certificates valued at £25. The employees have subscribed £1,609 12s to the windows’ fund, and have presented £50 each to 28 widows of soldiers. They have also subscribed £7,438 4s 1d towards the local war relief fund, and the firm have made grants to soldiers’ dependents amounting to £5,010 0s. 6d”.
