SOUTH SHIELDS

Call for recipes for meatless suppers 1939-45
The Shields Gazette 31/01/1941 reports.

The shortage of meat supplies in South Shields and the announcement by Lord Woolton (Minister of Food) that the meat ration is to be reduced to 1s 6d a head a week from Monday next is causing a problem for housewives. Men engaged in heavy industries and children require wholesome nutritious meals, and if meat is not available, housewives and mothers still have to serve up meals which have a food value equal to a meat meal.

With the object of assisting and advising housewives, the Shields Gazette asked Miss M.A. Appleby, food expert in charge of South Shields Food Economy, for suggestions for meatless but substantial dinners.
