EAST BOLDON

Home for soldiers opened.1915

The Newcastle Journal 19/08/1915 reports the opening of a home for soldiers. It was an extension of the East Boldon Wesleyan Chapel. "The new building is of stone, is Gothic in style, is attached to the chapel, is commodious and well-lighted. A total of £433. 10s 1d was raised by subscriptions and otherwise towards defraying the cost, which amounted to £475, leaving between $40-£50 to be raised."
The building was opened on 18th August by Mrs. T.H. Bainbridge of Eshott Hall, Northumberland, who had donated £100 towards the costs. A plaque to one of her sons Lieut. Thomas Lindsay Bainbridge was unveiled during the ceremony.
Mr. J. Wallace Taylor of Sunderland gave £50.
