EASINGTON COLLIERY

Presentations of medals
The Auckland Chronicle 08/01/1920 reports:
"Presentation of Medals.
On Saturday night in the Miners' Hall, Easington Colliery, the commencement was made to present 1,028 medals to the soldiers and sailors who served in the war. The North Side and Seaside Lane men, to the number of 219, were invited to a concert, over which Mr. Foster (engineer) was introduced by Mr. Watson (chairman of the committee) to preside. Songs were sung by Messrs. Hills, Joyce, R. Forster and Simmons. The medals were presented to the men by Messrs. Lishman (manager), J.W. Robinson (assistant manager) and T.H. Potts (cashier). The cost of the medals totalled over £1,600 and were got from Messrs. Samuel's. In the case of those who made the supreme sacrifice the medals were presented in the shape of brooches to mothers or wives. The money has been largely contributed by the men of the colliery, deducted weekly from their earnings."
