Murphy V.C. grave in North Road Cemetery
In North Road Cemetery is the grave of Michael Murphy, V.C. His story was told in Northern Echo 16/04/2008 when honour was paid on the 150th anniversary of the action in which he won the VC.

Michael Murphy was a farrier and 21 years old when serving with the 2nd Batt. Military Train in India. In 1858 he went with another man to assist a wounded man who had been knocked from his horse by rebels. The two fought the rebels until help arrived, both being wounded. His partner died the next day.

Murphy later became one of only eight men to forfeit their V.C. after being convicted of theft.
