Welcome Home celebrations for 1914-18 POWs.
The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 10/03/1919 carries a lengthy report about the welcome home celebrations in the Victoria Hall. Over 1,000 repratriated solders and their lady friends sat down to tea. "This was provided by the D.L.I. Prisoners of War Fund Committee, who at the time of the armistice was signed were bury with a scheme of raising 160,000 shillings, and most of the money was then collected or subscribed to the fund".

£25,000 has been raised in the town for the purose of making the lives of the prisoners bright . . . 38,000 parcels were sent out every month, of which 8,000 failed to find their destination . . . over 100 ladies worked day by day in rota . . . A telegram was read out from the King, another from Admiral Sir David Beatty and another from Sir John French
