In the Library is a plaque bearing an Admiralty oval shield with fouled anchor surmounted by a naval crown. The whole is mounted onto a light oak frame.

Below is a small brass plate which reads:

Presented by
the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty
to Houghton le Spring
Urban District Council
to commemorate the adoption of
H.M.S. Wellard
during Warship Week December 1941.

There is also a presentation plaque which reads:

This plaque
is presented to
H.M.S. Wellard
to commemorate
her adoption by
the citizens of
Houghton-le-Spring
Urban District
During Warship Week
December 6-13 1941.

War Savings Campaign
Houghton-le-Spring
Savings Committee.

These were housed in Houghton Area Office which was due for demolition in 2011. An 11th hour appeal to the Council meant the plaques could be rescued and placed in the Library.
