GAINFORD

Doric column, Aachen, 1748
The first Duke of Northumberland purchased a 40-foot high Doric Column which was placed in the grounds of Stanwick Park to commemorate the Peace of Aachen in 1748.
When the hall was being demolished, c.1920, the column was bought for 10 guineas by Robert Edlestone. He wanted to erect it in the churchyard but permission was not granted, so he placed it in the grounds of his home at Edlestone Hall as near to the churchyard as possible.
