In Pelton Churchyard the headstone of Matthew Ledger reads:-

Matthew Ledger
died Nov. 23rd 1863
aged 33 years
Erected by Major John Joicey
and the other Officers
non commissioned Officers and
Privates of the 10th Durham
Beamish Rifle Volunteers
as a mark of respect to the first
member of their Corps deceased
since its formation in 1860.
