FENCE HOUSES

Morton House used as Convalescent Home
The 16/12/1916 reports:

Noble work at Fence Houses.
One might write a great deal on the flow of human charity since the war commenced. There are so many aspects of it to provoke our praise and admiration. Take, for example, the splendid work that is being done in connection with our war hospitals, general, and private; it is done in quiet, devoted fashion, and is not known to everybody. My attention has been drawn to the subject of the private hospitals by a visitor to one of them, quite off the beaten track, at Fence Houses, to wit. There, in a fine old-fashioned 18th century residence (Morton House), Mrs. R.C. Thompson, wife of the well-known Sunderland shipowner, has converted her home into a convalescent hospital, and from the very outset has, with her family and servants, devoted herself untiringly and unceasingly to the work of bringing back to health and strength the battered heroes who have so nobly withstood the shock of battle for our beloved country.

All honour to Mrs. Thompson and her prototypes in all parts of the kingdom-for, thank heaven, there are many - and may the sweet spirit of self-sacrifice thus shown be reaped in full harvest continually, when this cruel war is gone- we trust, never to return.
