BIRTLEY (Gateshead)

The Boys of Birtley

Poem side

Names side

A card was issued which had a poem on one side and a list of those serving on the other.

The poem reads:
The "Boys" of Birtley.

The Boys of Birtley! True and brave.
And born to live in awesome time;
They, eager, sprang their homes to save
From peril wrought by German crime;
They left the mine, the shop, the mill,
Their higher calling to fulfil.

The Boys of Birtley! Parish small
(Unmarked upon great England's chart), -
They heard the Trump of Duty call
And marched to do the soldier's part;
Untrained for War, they learned to fight
For GOD and Freedom, Truth and Right.

The Boys of Birtley! Birtley dear
(For Church, or school, or sweetest hom), -
They nothing knew of coward fear
On foreign soil or ocean foam;
For Mother, Sister, Wife or Child
They faced the foemen stern and wild.

The Boys of Birtley! Firm they stood
Where raged the battle fierce and wide;
They freely shed their youthful blood,
They fought and conquered or - they died!
Diverse in name, diverse in Creed,
But one in true old British breed!

The Boys of Birtley! LORD above,
We bless Thee for their gallant souls!
And these whol Thou hast called in Love
Beyond where Death's calm river rolls
We pray Thee grant Thy Light and rest, -
Our heroes truest, bravest, best!

The Boys of Birtley! When is told,
In ages which are yet to be,
The story of the hearts of gold
Which kept old England strong and free,
Not least in proud Britannia's heart
Shall boys of Birtley have a part

The reverse side of the card has a Union flag in the top left hand corner. The names are listed in three columns.
