Birtley Co-op Welcome Home 1919
The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 18/12/1919 reports a Welcome Home reunion and lunch laid on for employees who returned from the Great War.

About 83 of the employees had been in service, which was about 70 per cent of the work force. Eight had fallen.

The Co-op had paid £3,077 2s 6d to the dependents, of which £1,093 15s 7d had been provided by employees. The Co-op was continuing to pay out a grant of 7s 6d per week, and 5s for single men, to the relatives of the deceased men.

The Society management board had agreed to spend £250 towards the costs of “Welcome Homes” and another £250 for war memorials covered by the Society.

The employees who had returned from service were each given a gold medal suitably inscribed with the recipient’s name.
