Carr-Ellison Plaque, St. Mary's
In St.Mary’s Church, in the south aisle, is a plaque with enamelled arch dedicated to Capt John Ralph Carr- Ellison of Hedgerley, Dunston Hill and Hebburn, eldest surviving son of Ralph Carr-Ellison. He was gazetted to 33rd Duke of Wellington's Regiment in 1853, served throughout the Crimean campaign, including the battles of Alma and Inkerman and the siege of Sebastopol. He was awarded the medal with three clasps of the Turkish order of Medjidie, and the Sardinian medal. He served 13 years with the 4th K.O.R. regiment, and retired in 1870.
He was J.P., the Northumberland and Durham High Sheriff of Northumberland 1888, 1907.
The plaque was made by Gawthorp of London.
