A Winlaton Soldier Honoured

The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 04/09/1916 reports:-

The Winlaton Soldiers' and Sailors' Welcome Home Committee organised a procession on Saturday in honour of Corporal J.J. Dixon who resides in the village, having won the military medal. The procession was headed by Winlaton Village Band and included ambulance men and women and Boy Scouts. Corporal and Mrs Dixon were driven round the village in a finely decorated motor car. a concert was afterwards held in the Co-operative Hall at which Corporal Dixon was presented with a luminous watch. Councillor William Latimer presided and Mr R. Adamson handed over the gift. Miss Wilson, Mr J.M. Jones, Mr Thos. Lawson and the Winlaton Village Band provided the programme.
