The colours of the 1st Tyneside Scottish (20th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers) were laid up in Holy Cross Church on 2nd August 1920.

The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 10/07/1920 reports the proposed event, following which the men and dependants of the Tyneside Scottish were to be entertained through the kindness of the Stella Coal Company, followed by a programme of sports, etc.

A plaque alongside reads:
Displayed here is The Colour of the
1st. Battalion Tyneside Scottish
(20th Btn. Northumberland Fusiliers)
Rededicated in Ryton Parish Church
on 30th June 1996
the eve of the 80th Anniversary of the
Battle of the Somme”
