The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 24/01/1919 reports:
Messrs. John Bowes and Partners, Ltd., owners of the Marley Hill, Andrew’s House, Byermoor, Burnopfield, Dipton and Prontop Collieries, the Marley Hill Bye-Product works, and the Pontop and Jarrow Railway, are presenting each employee who has gained distinction in the war with a suitably inscribed timepiece and a cheque for £5. The recipients to date number 16.
