In St. Andrew's Church are plaques commemorating the Hodgson generations.

The top plaque (85cms x 70cms) reads:

In memory of
Major General
John Anthony Hodgson
eldest son of the late
George and Margaret Hodgson
Of Bishop Auckland
where he was born July 2nd 1777.
He was intended for the profession of the law
and followed it to the year 1799, when he embarked for India
and became Lieutenant in the 10th Regt. of Bengal Native Infantry.
In 1817 he was selected to conduct a survey
of the sources of the rivers Ganges and Jumna
and in 1821 was appointed Surveyor General of India.
In 1827, the loss by death of a beloved wife induced him to
resign his important office and return to England.
He resided for some time in the city of Durham, the place
of his early education, and in consideration of his
scientific attainments was admitted to the honorary
degree of Master of Arts in the University of Durham.
He then returned to India, and whilst in command
of the district of Rohilcund, died at Umballah
March 28th 1848, in the 71st year of his age,
and was there buried.
