NORTH EAST

North East Coal Mining Presentation plaques.

After the Great War, the men who returned, or the families of those who fell, were presented, in some communities, with a plaque, usually individually inscribed.

The plaque was 6 inches wide x 4 inches high, and was made of silver plate and copper mounted on an oak base.

To the left is a soldier carrying a rifle, and on the right is a grieving lady bearing a wreath. The centre panel was outlined with acanthus flowers. In it was the wording chosen by the donors.

Sometimes the panel opened and contained tobacco, or a treasury note, or a watch.

The plaque shown here was presented to Pte. W. Collins
