BISHOP AUCKLAND

Local man wins certificate design competition
The Auckland Chronicle 26/02/1920 reports:

First in the Kingdom

Auckland Artist’s Success in
National Contest.

In an art competition promoted by the National Association of Discharged and Demobilised Sailors and Soldiers the first prize has been gained by a local artist, Mr. B.C. Hedley of Bishop Auckland.

The competition took the form of a design for a dispensation certificate, and was open to all members of the Association throughout the Kingdom.

In view of the very large number of entries, Mr. Hedley’s bringing the prize to Bishop Auckland is the more creditable.

The successful design submitted by Mr. Hedley is beautifully executed in colours, and surmounted by the badge of the Association in the centre of a scroll bearing British flags. Supporting the scroll are two Corinthian pillars, wreathed with laurel and each having a lion on a pedestal at its base. In the interior corners there are four designs representing branches of the services – an aeroplane, a submarine, a tank and a battleship. A finishing touch to the effective design is the Silver Badge skillfully worked in silver colour at the foot. The centre is an oval panel for inscription purposes.

Mr. Hedley is entirely self-taught.
