Among these was Ex.Sergt. H. Gallagher of 10 Tees Terrace, Coundon, and his wife, who came from Arnhem. She had been a German slave worker in the clothing factory since 1941.
Other men who were presented included:
Pte. J. Blackmore of Stanley;
Pte. A.W. Herbert of Bishop Auckland;
Pte. R. Hutchinson from Eldon;
Gunner F. Taylor of Toronto.
Relatives of some of the men who fell also attended. These included:
Mrs. Ogden, mother of Pte. F. Ogden of South Church;
Mr. R. Wappatt, Bishop Auckland, father of Trooper Kenneth Wappatt;
Mr. and Mrs. Lawson, Bishop Auckland, parents of Sgt. G. Lawson;
Mr. Bianco, Bishop Auckland, father of Sergt. Bianco.
"An inscribed plaque made of metal from one of the crashed gliders which carried the 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem on 17th September 1944 was presented by Pte. Hutchinson to Cllr. Proudfoot, who said that it would grace the walls of the Town Hall as a perpetual reminder of the heroic deeds of their boys in the war".
