DURHAM CITY

Unknown 1914-18 soldier buried in St.Nicholas churchyard
An article entitled "Unknown Soldier Buried in Durham" by John Sheen, published by Northumberland and Durham Family Research, poses the question: Who was the corporal in the Tyneside Irish buried in St. Nicholas Churchyard in 1916?

An obituary in Durham Chronicle 14/07/1916 states that it was Cpl. Wm. H. Lofthouse, but he is known to be buried in France.

John Sheen offers several names of who this might have been, and highlights the confusion following the identification of soldiers from the Great War.
