In Durham Cathedral, in the cloisters, is a bronze plaque with coloured enamelled shield dedicated to the memory of Brigadier General Sir Herbert Conyers Surtees, Knt., CB., MG., DSO., MVO., DL., JP., FSA., of Mainsforth "distinguished in War and peace as soldier diplomatist antiquary and man of letters by his care for his estates and love for the history of Durham he worthily maintained the traditions of an ancient family". He died in 1933 aged 75
