BRANCEPETH

Castle used as hospital
The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 19/11/1920 reports:

Brancepeth’s War Record.
It is worth recalling the valuable part Brancepeth Castle played as a hospital during the years of the late war. Through the kindness of Viscount Boyne it became an auxiliary to the 1st Northern General Hospital in Newcastle, and throughout the period it was staffed by his lordships’ household servants. Viscountess Boyne and a brother and sister of the Viscount took a practical part in the administration work. The hall, the baron’s hall, dining room and armour gallery were used as wards, and over 4,000 soldiers and sailors passed through the hospital. The castle ceased to be used as a hospital in February of last year.

The Durham Times 07/11/2014 carries a report with some photos.
