BISHOP MIDDLEHAM

In St. Michael's Church is a marble plaque which reads:

In memory of
Brigadier General
Sir Herbert Conyers Surtees, Kt.,
C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., M.V.O., D.L., J.P., F.S.A.
only child of Colonel Charles Freville
Surtees of Mainsforth.
Honorary Colonel of the 4th Battn. Durham
Light Infantry, sometime Colonel command-
ing the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards.
Born 13 January 1858, died 18 April 1933.
He fought in the Egyptian Campaigns
of 1884 and 1887, in the South African War,
and as Commander of the 52nd Infantry
Brigade in the Great War of 1914-18.
On his retirement he devoted himself
to the service of this County, being
Member of Parliament for Gateshead
from 1919-23 and High Sheriff in 1927.
A keen and able antiquary he was the
author of numerous parish histories and
of the records of the family of Surtees.
In many spheres and countries he served
his generation and loyally and generously
administered the talents entrusted to him.
