BISHOP MIDDLEHAM

In St. Michael's Church is a marble plaque which reads:


In affectionate memory of
Colonel Charles Freville Surtees,
of Mainsforth Hall in this Parish, J.P., D.L.,
youngest son of Robert Surtees, Esqre.
of Redworth Hall in the Parish of Heighington,
in the County Palatine of Durham,
High Sheriff of the County 1873,
and Member of Parliament for South Durham
MDCCCLXV - MDCCCLXVIII,
and of the 3rd Battalion Durham Light Infantry
of which he was for thirty years Honorary Colonel,
who departed this life
on the XXII day of December MCMVI,
aged LXXXIII years.
This tablet is placed by his son
Colonel Conyers Surtees, C.B., M.V.O., D.S.O.
of Mainsforth.
"The just shall be had in everlasting remembrance".

(He was M.P. from 1865 to 1868. He died on 22nd December 1906 aged 83.)
