Stanley Wesleyan Methodist Welcome Home
The Stanley News and North West Durham Observer 25/09/1919 reports:-

The members of the Wesleyan Church held a 'welcome home' to the returned soldiers and their womenfolk and to the wives etc of those who have fallen last Wednesday night.

The entertainment was held in the church which was nicely decorated by Mr C. Green and as the company was large, the hall presented a bright and lively appearance. The roll of honour showed 125 names, of which 15 were of men who had laid down their lives.

Mr J.C. Brown took the chair and in extending a welcome to the returned soldiers and sailors said how thankful he was to see so many spared. He expressed sympathy with those who had lost relatives in the war.

The Rev F.W. Utley, the resident minister, welcomed the men and said that in the future the churches would have to break down the old barriers and make the services shorter and brighter.

Mr J.J. Scott and Mr A Lowery suitably responded on behalf of the ex-servicemen.

55 ex-soldiers responded to the invitations and there are some 12 or 14 still in the service.
