Letter re Service 1946

Record of Service 1939-46

Constance Lodge of Freemasons has met in Consett since 1886. No members were lost in either Wars.

In amongst Constance Lodge Records is a letter sent out to all Lodge Members in June 1946 by J.D. Jarvis, the Constance Lodge Secretary.

Dear Sir and Brother,
The following is an extract from a Communication received from Grand Lodge.
'The Board require that each Lodge shall collect detailed information and prepare a report to be incorporated in the Minute Book of the Lodge, and a copy sent to the Grand Secretary for preservation in the Records of Grand Lodge and that the report should include such matters as:-
a. The names of Brethren who took part in all forms of National Service both at home and abroad
b. The names of those who were disabled and the names of those who made the supreme sacrifice

In order that the Records of Constance Lodge may be absolutely complete, I hope that every Brother will send me full particulars of his National Service at the earliest possible moment.
Please give:-
Name, rank, Number (if any), Regiment Etc – Countries in which you have served- Any outstanding personal memories especially as they affect Masonry. Kindly note that these particulars are also required from Brethren who served in any way with the Civil Defence or other Home Services in any shape or form.'

The subsequent complied list was attached to the Minutes of December 1946. There is also a handwritten list labelled Preliminary Record of National Service. There are 33 names on this list and 32 names on the official list. It is assumed that a copy was sent to Grand Lodge.
