On the Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of 2505B Able Seaman John Hogan, serving on H.M.S. Aboukir with the Royal Navy Reserve, who died 22/09/1914.

He was employed as a Mooringman at the N.E.R. at West Hartlepool. Originally he was employed as a Dock Gateman at Tyne Dock, before being transferred in July 1910. He started employment with the NER in 1907.

He was married with 4 children and resided at 25 Blake Street, West Hartlepool.

John was killed in the torpedoing of HMS Aboukir, ship number 108151, by U-9 commanded by Kapitanleutnant Otto Weddigen on the 22nd September 1914. He had completed 12 years service. He was aged 32 when he died.

John Hogan is remembered at Hartlepool on H115.16, H115.26, in H115.30 page 19, at West Hartlepool on W111.004,  W111.054 in W111.086 page 16, on the North Eastern Railway War Memorial (York) and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
