South elevation
Thine, O Lord is the Victory
E mare ex industria.
Obelisk, tapering from 96 inches (243cms) square at the base to 64 inches (162cms) at the top, total height 66 feet (20.1m).
Towards the bottom, above the dedication, is a bronze wreath with the West Hartlepool coat of arms and the motto “E Mare ex Industria” (“Industry comes from the Sea”).
Below this, the dedication is incised on a sunken panel on the front of the pedestal using Roman capitals.
On the back is another sunken panel with plain bronze wreath above in which is the text “Thine O Lord is the Victory” below a sunken cross.
At the bottom it is flanked by two stone walls bearing the plaques with the names.
The twelve bronze panels each 48 inches high x 38 inches wide (121cm x 97cm) which bear the names have rolled moulded edges.
The names are listed in three columns on each in raised Roman capitals.
The whole sits on five shallow steps in a wide paved area 77 feet (23.4m) wide, which represent each year of the war.
At the top of the pedestal is a bronze laurel wreath on all four sides.

1. The unveiling should have been performed by the Earl of Durham, but he was ill, and the unveiling was done by his brother instead.
2. The designer, Mr. Coombs died before the memorial was built, but his designs were still used.
3. This has obviously been updated to include 1939-45, as an old photo shows only the dates of 1914-18. The laurel wreath now above the dedication was originally a badge (?town coat of arms)
4. Cllr. Cameron suggested to the Town Council that a plaque bearing the names of all whose who died should be placed in the Council Chamber. This was defeated in favour of the motion that the names should be in Victory Square where they would be seen by the public.
5. The Chief Memorial for West Hartlepool was approved at a public meeting called by the Mayor, Councillor T. F. Thompson. It is one suggested at an earlier meeting by Alderman Charles Macfarlane, (Mayor 1915-1917).
This included the purchase of what was at present known as “The Armoury Field” on the south side of the site, which was already in the hands of the Corporation for the erection of Municipal Buildings in the future. The idea was to create a Public Square or “Place” onto which Municipal Buildings would face when set up; to erect a War Memorial, with the names of all local men who gave their lives and, on the south side of the “Place”, to raise public buildings, with a noble elevation, to balance the Municipal Buildings on the north side. The proposed Memorial, estimated to cost £150,000, included the provision of Cottage Homes, to be built on suitable sites for the aged and infirm. It was expected that a wide and generous response would be made to the appeal for funds for the Memorial. The Mayor was Chairman of the Committee, Alderman Macfarlane, Vice Chairman, Mr. R. D. Lambert , Honorary Secretary, Mr. Nelson F. Dennis, C. E., Honorary Architect, and Mr. J. Dennett, Honorary Solicitor.
6. The architects who were invited to submit designs were only from Northumberland, Durham and Yorkshire. The competition resulted in ten entries, of whom five were selected to a second competition. The other four competitors were: Mr. Hubert Gregory, Ben Rhydding; Messrs. Hays and Gray, A.R.I.B.A, Wingate & North Shields; Mr. John W. English, M.S.A., Newcastle upon Tyne; Mr. F.W. Doyle Jones, R.B.S., London and West Hartlepool.
7. The five steps leading to the obelisk represent the five years of the war.
8. Victoria Road was originally called Cambridge Road and was renamed Victoria Road on the occasion of the 1897 Diamond Jubilee.
9. Almost £1000 came from the ‘Tipperary Clubs’ towards the Memorial before they closed in March 29th 1919.
